Fairfax Hearing on Islamic Saudi Academy Lease – Tuesday, Oct.19

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will hold a hearing on the lease for the controversial, Saudi-owned Islamic Saudi Academy (Route 1) at 5 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 19 at the Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax. Members of the Virginia Anti-Shariah Task Force (VAST) and other community groups will testify against renewing the Saudi government’s lease. Contact: James Lafferty, 703-931-2324

  1. How is the First Amendment applicable here? The First Amendment states, and I quote:
    "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or
    prohibiting the free exercise thereof; ..."
    It is a prohibition against Congress, not the City Council of Alexandria. And it's the only amendment that cites specifically the federal government; the rest apply generally. I'm shocked that Cuccinelli would cite the First Amendment as a primary reason the Council would feel compelled to renew the lease. I've put a call into his office for an explanation/clarification.

  2. The First Amendment is incorporated against the states, which includes state political subdivisions.
